1. Do you have (or know where to locate) any written documentation about your computer network?
Do you have an inventory of what software licenses you own? When do your equipment warranties expire? Do you know critical administrator passwords, or where to locate them? If they were suddenly unavailable, this could lead to huge consequences for your company.
2. Do you know where your backup files are stored? Are they stored properly?
As a business owner or C-level executive, you are probably dealing with daily fires and don’t have time to think about your data. That is why you have someone on staff to be the expert, right? But if your server gets corrupted, and your in-house IT person is on a two-week vacation, you might be in trouble.
3. Do you have a disaster recovery plan for restoring your network fast?
When was the last time your in-house IT person tested your disaster recovery plan to confirm it actually works? If there is a hurricane or some other disaster, you might not be back up and running as quickly as you thought.
4. Do you know how to protect your data if your in-house IT person quit?
How quickly would you be able to disable his or her permissions, including remote access to your network, their devices, and all cloud-based applications? If the relationship ended pretty badly, and your in-house IT person has access to your network, it can get ugly.
5. Do you know what routine maintenance must be done to your network?
Do you know how to keep track of all the servers, computers and devices, routers, switches, and access points? If you aren’t even sure what some of these things are, you might want to start asking questions.
Relying on one person to know everything about your technology is not a smart business decision.
